Q. I am looking to install laminate flooring. I'm shopping around, using local yellow pages, for flooring/installation companies One in particular seems ok but their labor price is quite high, $3.50/sq foot. How do I negotiate the price down? It's quite frankly not something I could afford but still want to use them. Is there a set of questions I should ask all these flooring companies, like should I ask for references...should they have a certain certification...should they offer installation warranty.. Please let me know what's most important when choosing such a company, in terms of quality and price. **please let me know what our experience is -are u a contractor, do u install laminate etc.. A. Your best negotiation is to get at least three quotes from three reputable, qualified, certified installers. Check their references and how they stand with the Better Business Bureau as well. Then if you still like the one, you have quotes to barter with and they can then choose to lower their rate or bow out. You still have others to choose from. We have always done this when looking for contractors and have found some will work with you on their pricing and some not. Don't settle for some handyman working on the side. We did that once and really took it in the ear.

A. If you want to be a CPA then check your state's requirements. If you want to be just an accountant or work in accounts receivable or accounts payable, then a degree in accounting, finance, or business should do the trick. You should be able to attend school online or in a regular classroom setting for accounting. You may also want to learn accounting software. Some programs you may want to learn are Quickbooks, Quicken, Peachtree, and Excel.

Q. I have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and I have been working at a large bank in the fraud/risk department for 4 years. I am really interested in becoming a forensic accountant, and I would like to know what steps do I need to take to become a qualified forensic accountant, and can I use my experience in the fraud department as a Risk Analyst towards becoming a forensic accountant? A. First you need your designation in accounting. in Canada its a CA in the States is a CPA. This can take as little as a couple years if you already have a university business program under your belt. you must pass the CA/CPA exams and complete a designated number of auditing/tax/general hours in a accredited accouting firm. than you can take the forensic accouting exam. when you pass this you must complete another designated amount of hours in the field. yes, its long. but that's why in Canada they START at about $100,000 (and thats a conservative number).

Q. I want to become an accountant and eventually get my CPA. I searched for schools that offers accounting program and most UC school don't offer a Business degree with option in accounting but the smaller CSU schools like Fullerton and Long Beach does. Will a degree from the CSU system be sufficient to find a good job in accounting?

Q. Many accountants routinely expense things that should technically be depreciated, but because the amount is low - I've heard anything under $100, expense, under $1000 expense. Because the depreciation category is no longer being used for these furniture, computer, and other items, what Sked C category is or should be used? Supplies? Office expense? Miscellaneous (then you'd need to break it out and admit it really should have been depreciated). ??? PS - My understanding is the accountants in question are NOT using Section 179 - because that still requires the completion of depreciation schedules - they are just expensing it in regular expense categories to save time. My question, to clarify, is whay expenses categories are they using OTHER THAN depreciation?

A. Section 179 allows you to fully depreciation a lower priced item in the year of its purchase. What is considered immaterial depends on the business. Reems of paper are immaterial for a CPA firm, but are part of the final product for a newspaper producer.
